Systems capable of oscillation have a natural frequency at which they will oscillate in the absence of external forces. If an external force is applied with a frequency equal to a natural frequency of the system, the system is said to resonate and the amplitudes of the natural oscillation and the forced oscillation add. The resulting oscillation is a maximum.
